Lokoja, Kogi State
Popular Nigerian musician Jaywon has taken to his official Facebook page to call out rising insecurity in Kogi West, particularly the Okun region, while addressing recent online attacks he believes are politically motivated.
In a strongly worded post, the singer expressed disappointment over orchestrated social media backlash allegedly sponsored by political figures. He dismissed claims of his music career being irrelevant, citing his contributions to cultural preservation through songs in the Okun language since 2009 and his continuous philanthropic efforts.
“I may not always be proud of how my people behave, but facts are facts,” Jaywon wrote. “Since 2009, I’ve released over four songs in the Okun language, using my music to represent and preserve our culture.”
He also highlighted the establishment of a foundation in his late father’s name, which supports widows and orphans across Okunland and Lokoja, all funded by the career critics have labelled “dead.” The artist noted that he has mentored and financially supported over ten upcoming musicians from Kogi, something he said he never received when starting out.
Responding to coordinated attacks he says are being circulated via WhatsApp groups, Jaywon wrote:
“You’ve been instructed to attack me, all part of the stomach infrastructure politics you live for… while they’re paying you with data stipends to fight their battles, I’m sitting here with free data and more money in the bank.”
He ended the post with a passionate appeal for the same energy used to troll him to be redirected toward addressing the region’s pressing challenges.
“I only wish you used this same energy you’re wasting on me to speak out about the killings and kidnappings that have plagued our people for months.”
