The Rise of Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Agenda Under Dr. Mustapha’s Leadership

Lokoja, Nigeria

Since his appointment as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi has emerged as a transformative figure, spearheading reforms that are reshaping the country’s energy landscape. With a focus on policy formulation, renewable energy, capacity building, and international engagement, Dr. Abdullahi’s tenure has been marked by bold initiatives aimed at addressing Nigeria’s long-standing energy challenges.

One of his most notable achievements is the development and unveiling of the National Energy Policy (NEP) and the National Energy Master Plan (NEMP), strategic frameworks launched in 2024 to provide clear direction for Nigeria’s energy sector. These documents, produced for the first time in over 40 years, set the foundation for coordinated development across energy sources and technologies.

Recognizing the importance of reliable data, the ECN under Dr. Abdullahi’s direction launched the Computerized National Energy Information System (CNEIS) in 2024. This digital platform serves as a central hub for collecting and analyzing energy-related data, enhancing strategic planning and evidence-based policymaking.

Dr. Abdullahi has also prioritized energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. In collaboration with international development partners, the ECN is developing Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for common appliances to improve energy use and reduce environmental impact. In early 2024, the commission launched the Clean Cooking Wood Stove Initiative, which aims to reduce indoor air pollution and deforestation by promoting low-emission cooking alternatives.

Dr. Mustapha joined All Progressives Congress Stakeholders at the State House Banquet Hall for “Two Years of Impact: Honouring Mr. President and the Voices of Renewed Hope” to celebrate a legacy of progress, resilience, and national unity.

On the global stage, Dr. Abdullahi has represented Nigeria at major energy and climate summits. At COP28 in Dubai, he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to clean cooling and renewable energy transitions. He also participated in the G20 Energy Transition Working Group in Brazil, where he advocated for increased financial support to address Africa’s energy poverty.

Dr. Abdullahi’s impact extends to grassroots empowerment. Through the DAM Foundation, he has empowered over 500 women and youths in Kogi State with vocational skills and tools, while also awarding scholarships to enhance capacity within the ECN itself. His efforts are not only technical but deeply human, ensuring that reforms translate into tangible benefits for ordinary Nigerians.
