IGP Egbetokun Bans Policemen in Mufti from Carrying Rifles

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate ban on policemen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti). This directive was issued during a virtual meeting with senior police officers, where the IGP emphasized the importance of professionalism and strict adherence to human rights within the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP strongly condemned the practice, citing numerous complaints received through the Force’s complaint channels.

“No officer should be seen carrying assault rifles while in mufti. Any violation of human rights will not be tolerated and will attract severe consequences,” Adejobi stated.

The directive is part of ongoing efforts to curb police misconduct, improve public trust, and ensure that security personnel operate within the boundaries of the law.

Additionally, the IGP cautioned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing, stressing that officers must adhere strictly to the prescribed uniforms for their respective units.

“All tactical squads must comply with standard operating procedures and be properly dressed in their designated uniforms. Carrying assault rifles while in mufti is strictly prohibited,” the statement added.

Egbetokun also addressed concerns over the indiscriminate transfer of cases without his written approval, warning that such practices cause unnecessary delays and burdens for the affected parties. He reiterated that unauthorized case transfers would no longer be tolerated.

Concluding his directive, the IGP urged all police ranks to work collaboratively to uphold the integrity of the Force and prevent any misconduct that could tarnish its reputation.
